Since most of Iran’s oil is purchased by China, this long overdue disruption of Iran-China trade accomplishes major maiming of two nasty birds of prey with one stone. Tehran has its proxies in Hamas/Hezbollah/PLO while higher up the chain of command it functions as a proxy weapon of terror for China.

Progressive opinion has become obsessed with boardroom quotas and microaggressions – rather than the real oppression visited upon women
As Iranian women tear off their hijabs in the streets, defying a regime that has subjugated and brutalised them for decades, much of the Western progressive commentariat has been out to lunch. Where is the support for their glorious defiance? The Instagram carousels, the breathless declarations of “solidarity” from former Harry Potter stars and pouting influencers?
Iran’s women footballers this week refused to sing their country’s national anthem before an Asia Cup match, an act of dissent broadcast to the world. Footage has emerged of motorcyclists riding through Tehran with banners declaring “we can and we must” [overthrow the regime].
These are not virtue-signalling gestures performed from the safety of Western laptops, but dangerous acts of rebellion against a regime that imprisons and murders its critics. I was going to say “executes”, but that suggests some idea of legality. The death of Mahsa Amini in 2022 – beaten by morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly – sparked nationwide protests that were met with bullets, show trials and strangling from cranes. Not “executions”.
Yet there are few hashtags or flag-waving marches through London to assert sisterhood, no viral campaigns in response to the latest uprising. If ever there was a moment to demonstrate that modern feminism was a global movement committed to women’s liberty, surely this was it. But no. Rather, if ever there was lingering doubt about the moral relativism of Western progressives, this muted-to-non-existent response ought to extinguish it.
There was a time when solidarity was less selective. In March 1979, as Ruhollah Khomeini seized control after the Iranian Revolution, the American feminist Kate Millett travelled to Tehran to protest against the regime’s plan to make the hijab compulsory. She marched beside Iranian women against the tyranny of pitiless old men with beards. The protest failed and Millett was arrested and expelled. It was brave and principled. The litany of oppression that followed entrenched female subordination into law, with limitations on employment and education.
Too many Western feminists seem to have bought into a crude Third Worldist narrative in which the US is the origin of all wickedness, Israel the ultimate villain, and consequently anyone or anything opposed to them must be virtuous. To acknowledge out loud and repeatedly the Islamic Republic’s misogyny, brutality and sponsorship of violence abroad would disturb their belief that all injustice stems from Western imperialism. It would require an acceptance that theocratic regimes are perfectly capable of oppressing women all by themselves.
Feminism in Britain has morphed into a performative preoccupation with boardroom quotas, pay gaps and microaggressions. It’s far easier to harangue white male CEOs than challenge illiberal practices justified in the name of culture, even when they are occurring here in the UK. Awkward questions around women’s autonomy within tightly knit immigrant communities are seldom asked, let alone answered. Female labour market participation is similarly ignored: the worklessness rate for those of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage is much higher than among white women.
What pressures might these women face around marriage, education or sexual independence? How often are abuses dismissed as cultural sensitivities best left untouched? What are their views on the burka – which has been banned in France, Austria and other European nations? Leftie feminists like to claim wearing them is a choice, almost a symbol of empowerment. But when Iranian women were given the freedom to choose, many opted for miniskirts. What about “honour” killings – that foul oxymoron? These poor women did not “choose” their fate.
As for the rape gangs scandal? This exposed what happened when institutions prioritised the avoidance of inflaming “community tensions” over the protection of vulnerable girls. Preserving multiculturalism became more important than preventing the trafficking of teenagers by gangs of predominantly Pakistani men. Our “safeguarding minister” Jess Phillips initially rejected calls for a national inquiry; deputy Labour leader Lucy Powell once dismissed the scandal as a “dog whistle”.
A similar timidity has characterised discussions about female genital mutilation – not a distant atrocity limited to far-off lands but a form of child abuse committed with apparently increasing frequency in modern Britain. At the start of this year, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service claimed that terminating a pregnancy on grounds of foetal sex is not illegal. The suggestion was that deliberately killing foetuses simply because they are female is just another acceptable “choice”.
And then, last week, the quieter erosion of women’s civic liberties through “family voting” burst into the open at the Gorton and Denton by-election. Men instructing their wives how to vote is illegal, immoral, and an affront to democratic freedom.
The progressive instinct to avoid cultural offence has trumped the need to defend women’s autonomy. It’s easier to rage at the corporate patriarchy – and pretend it can be resolved with fatuous HR “training” and endless guilt-inducing seminars – than admit we have amongst us hundreds of thousands of people that view women as second-class citizens and are often hostile to 21st century notions of equality.
Many of us resist the label of “feminist”. Perhaps we can readopt the term if it ever again means what it’s supposed to.
UPDATE 3/6/26: Prior to Jimmy Carter’s betrayal of the Shah delivering the country to the medieval barbarity of the Ayatollah, Iran was a place an American might feel at home. Apparently, the sophisticated Left (and some surprising figures from the Right) 50 years later thinks Carter did a great thing that mustn’t be undone.

Looking back at what we thought in 2023 was self-inflicted career suicide, we are still surprised Trump thought her a good bet for his administration. Those deportation PSAs “Starring Kristi Noem” costing a questionable $220 million coupled with bald lies before Congress saying “It was Donald’s idea!” verify our misgivings were valid. Embarrassing.
Thanks for the deportations, but the staged photo-ops (in full make-up and cowgirl hair extensions) were tacky.
